UNESCO contributed to the official launch of the IFAP National Committee for Mozambique organized in close cooperation with the Mozambique National Commission for UNESCO. High-level government officials, representatives from the private and public sector, academics and other civil society organizations attended the two-day event in Maputo, Mozambique on 19 and 20 November 2018.

National IFAP Committees pursue the goals of IFAP as a whole at the national level by serving as a meeting point for various stakeholders and as an avenue for the transfer of knowledge from the international to the national level.  This unique structure was put in place in Mozambique to advance knowledge societies in the country.  H.E. the Minister of Education and Human Development noted in her opening remarks the importance of IFAP as a framework for international cooperation and partnerships in "building information and knowledge societies for all".  The minister also expressed her wish for IFAP to support Member States such as Mozambique in promoting knowledge-based societies for sustainable development and peace using information and communication technologies (ICT).

Mr. Serreno Olam, who attended the meeting on behalf of the UNESCO Representative, noted that in order for the IFAP National Committee to achieve its goals, it should fzcilitate the integration of UNESCO's policy resources into national policies.  The importance of the IFAP National Committee aligning its work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) was also highlighted.

After the launching ceremony, 30 IFAP committee members representing the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, the public and private sector and civil society organizations participated in various training sessions on IFAP, its 6 priorities and the work of the IFAP National Committee.  The IFAP National Committee Members also agreed to focus on three priority areas in its strategic plan, namely Information Literacy, Information Preservation and Information Ethics.  The recommendations from the workshop will enrich the implementation plan for the IFAP National Committee for Mozambique and will be presented to the Minister of Education and Human Development.

The governor of Maputo Province, the President of the Social Communication Counsel and the Secretary General of the Mozambique National Commission for UNESCO closed the training.  National IFAP Committees work closely with the National Commission for UNESCO and, where appropriate, cooperate with the local national coordination frameworks in the sphere of communication and information.

The activity was carried out in the framework of the UNESCO Korea Funds-in-Trust project that aims to foster human and social development in Mozambique, Rwanda and Zimbabwe, through the use of information and communication technology (ICT).
