Improving Quality of Agro-food Processing through Developing Occupational Standards
UNESCO Liaison Office in Addis Ababa organised a workshop aimed at validating the draft Occupational Standards in 13 agro-food processing fields and enriching them with inputs from relevant multidisciplinary professionals, from 7-11 October 2019 at Bishoftu. The development of the Occupational Standards is part of the BEAR II-Ethiopia project, which aims to enhance the relevance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ethiopia.
Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAE II) is an innovative project that UNESCO initiated with the Government of the Republic of Korea in five East African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Republic of Tanzania and Madagascar) in 2017. Specific to the BEAR II-Ethiopia project, it aims to enhance the relevance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to the needs of economy, improve the quality of TVET delivery and improve the perception of TVET among young people, enterprises and society.
Considering this and focusing on Agro-processing, which is among the key development strategies of the Ethiopian government, UNESCO in partnership with the Federal TVET Agency, Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Ministry of Industry and Trade has been implementing the BEAR II- project in Ethiopia. This process demonstrated a robust partnership of UNESCO with public and private sectors in engaging about 60 professionals and leveraging their contributions towards a common goal, improving the relevance and quality of TVET provision in Ethiopia.
As an outcome of the workshop, the final Occupational Standards will serve as the basis to develop assessment tools that help to evaluate the performance of TVET trainees, build the technical capacity of teachers and develop curriculum on 13 agro-food processing fields which will be used by the TVET providers across Ethiopia.
