UNESCO’s role as a global education actor and innovative technology to achieve the new 2030 Agenda were highlighted during a special event at the Moscow International Education Fair.

The fair, organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation with the and other organizations, took place from 3 to 16 April, 2016 in Moscow.

The IITE’s side event ‘Interaction of IITE with UNESCO Global Networks and Private Sector Partners: ICTs in Education and Innovative Pedagogy’, on April 13 gathered over 100 participants to discuss the latest trends and projects of ICT including representatives from the international and national private sector. UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network schools and partner universities presented their projects and examples of fruitful collaboration with UNESCO IITE.

UNESCO as global education actor

Mr Qian Tang, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education also took part in a presentation entitled ‘UNESCO as a Global Education Actor’ dedicated  to the SDG4 -  Education 2030 agenda and the roles of UNESCO and Member States.

Speaking at this session on 15 April, Mr Qian Tang, underlined: ‘This International Fair provides an excellent platform for inspiration, exchange, reflection, networking and action in order to advance all of us together towards the implementation of the 2030 Education Agenda.’

He said the agenda provided a single, holistic view of education and called on UNESCO as the specialized UN agency for education, to not only coordinate global efforts, but to be operational and put its comparative advantages at the service of Member States’ Governments.  

However, he stressed that: ‘Countries are at the very centre of the implementation of the agenda.”

Mr Tang also took part in a round table on ‘Cooperation in Education and Science between Russia and Europe’ jointly organized by the Russian Federation and the Council of Europe in which he spoke on the prevention of violent extremism through education.

The event attracted more than 40,000 visitors, including several Ministers of Education from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, and served as a platform for more than 200 forums, lectures, workshops, masterclasses, training sessions and exhibitions.
