International Conference “Strengthening Regional Water Cooperation in Central Asia”

 

On 25 May 2021, the International Conference “Strengthening Regional Water Cooperation in Central Asia” organized by the International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) and the UNESCO Tashkent Office will take place at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (Tashkent) in a mixed format (online and offline).

Its main aim is to discuss aspects of strengthening dialogue in the water and environment sectors, as well as to allow for the exchange of views on deepening cooperation in those two important fields.

The Conference will be attended by Mr Anvar Nasirov, Director of IICA, Mr Jan Hladík, Head of the UNESCO Tashkent Office, Ms Natalia Gherman, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Central Asia, Mr Khusniddin Sharofiddinov, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, Ms Helena Fraser, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, Mr Hans-Ullrich Ihm, Deputy Head of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, Mr Umid Shadiev, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Uzbekistan to UNESCO; as well as representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, analytical entities of the Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and other national and international stakeholders.

Among other issues, the Conference will discuss the activities of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), which since its establishment in 1993 has served as the main platform for the implementation of agreed regional water and environmental projects.  It will also include the launch of the UN World Water Development Report 2021 on “Value of Water”.

The Conference will result in practical proposals and initiatives for strengthening regional water cooperation in Central Asia and improving IFAS activities.

International Institute for Central Asia – is a public research institution, established on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, H. E. Mr Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The Institute aims to establish broad links with leading research organizations in Central Asia and other states, as well as with the experts from international organizations dealing with Central Asian issues.
