Irina Bokova meets with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, senators and CONACULTA authorities on the first day of her official visit to Mexico
On 14 March, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Jose Antonio Meade Kuribe帽a, with whom they discussed the joint agenda between Mexico and UNESCO. In the field of education, the meeting focused on such topics as assessment, curriculum development and the prevention of youth violence.
The Director-General and the Minister of Foreign Affairs exchanged views on the illicit trafficking of cultural property, an area in which Mexico works closely with UNESCO, particularly through mechanisms provided by the 1970 Convention.
On the same day, the Director-General held a meeting with the Senators of Commissions on Education, Science, Culture, Foreign Affairs and International Organizations. Policy makers presented to Irina Bokova the recently passed education reform and the expectations related to its implementation.
"I welcome with interest and enthusiasm the steps that are being taken to transform the educational system at all levels," said the Director-General.
On the first day of this four day official visit to Mexico, the Director-General also met with the President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA), Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, and the Director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Sergio Ra煤l Arroyo.
The Director-General and both Mexican officials highlighted the importance of involving society and communities in disseminating culture and in protecting heritage.
The day ended with the participation of Irina Bokova in the opening of the exhibition "Jos茅 Guadalupe Posada. Transmitter ", that took place in the National Art Museum in Mexico City.
