Overview of the functions of the post

The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa is housed in Harare, covering nine countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Zambia and Zimbabwe. Our programmes cover these nine countries in the areas of Education for sustainable development, Communication and Information systems, Science, technology and innovation, Culture and Heritage as well as human and social sciences; with a focus on the youth, women and minority groups. The regional office operates in a wider policy context, within the organization’s global policies, aligned with African regional and subregional policy frameworks, and dovetailing with national policies and planning mechanisms.

 

The UNESCO Natural Science programmes are guided by international frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Paris Agreement (2015) on climate action, United Nations Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030), the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The vision of UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa’s Natural Sciences Unit (SC) is to advance prosperous Africa-led global competitiveness with science, technology and innovation for peace building, inclusive growth, and sustainable socio-economic transformation of the continent.

 

The intern will be part of a unit with staffing in the different regional offices and will have the opportunity to learn and support the overall work of the sector’s mission.  The Regional Office has a staff complement in the Science unit of twelve(12) staff in Harare, Johannesburg the antenna office with two science project staff and four other staff in the other antenna office in the southern Africa Region. The team implements a large programme in the region around a core programme and several projects. The intern’s workplan is flexible and will be discussed, around the following elements:

 

1. Support and participate in the design and implementation of the Environment and Earth Sciences activities, including Indigenous Knowledge Systems and the Be Resilient portfolio of projects. 

2. Develop and implement one independent research project or study.

3. Participate in meetings related to UNESCO and UN activities.

4. Assist in designing and implementing UN International Commemoration Days E.g. World Water Day, World Environment Day, World Biosphere Reserve Day that are celebrated yearly.

5. Assist with the organization of national and regional conferences, workshops, and events.

6. Support the development of communication materials.

7. Aid with other project activities as requested and performing any, other tasks including general office work as may be required to ensure the success of the team.

Learning Objectives

The intern will acquire an understanding of the overall work of UNESCO and relevant experience in project designing, planning and implementation within an international and multicultural context and more specifically the Natural Sciences Sector’s domain. The objectives will comprise of the following;

 

  1. Gain a good understanding of the functioning of the UN system, UNESCO, and the UNESCO Science programmes. 

  2. Increase the ability to understand management of natural heritage.

  3. Gain experience with the programme and project cycle, including designing, planning, implementing, evaluating.

  4. Build on creativity and innovation skills in an enabling environment.

  5. Gain experience working in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team in the context of a large regional office.

  6. Develop interpersonal skills and independent work organization and accountability for delivery.

  7. Understand administrative procedures and develop soft skills such as stakeholder management, problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, and work ethic within the UNESCO Competency Framework, in particular teamwork, flexibility, communication, and client-oriented service mindset.

Required Qualifications

Education: 

At the time of your application to the internship programme:

You are currently enrolled in a graduate programme in Environment, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Earth Sciences (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent, second university degree or higher), or you have recently graduated with a Master’s degree or PhD (or second degree as defined above),12 months prior to the start of the internship. 

Please note that candidates who have completed their full-time bachelor's degree but are not enrolled in a graduate programme are not eligible to apply.

Experience (if any): None required but previous internship experience in the Science sector is an advantage.

Language skills: English, any other UN language is an advantage.

  • Competencies and skills: Creative, excellent communication skills, team player, writing, photography, and multimedia.

Computer skills: You must have an excellent knowledge of computer systems and office-related software.

Team player: You should be able to work well in a team and adapt to an international working environment.

Communication skills: You should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Benefits and Entitlements

Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during their internship.

Selection and Recruitment Process

The UNESCO Internships Programme is open in January and July each year. Candidates shall apply to the vacancy that matches their personal expertise and domain. Candidates who successfully applied to the vacancy will stay in the intern talent pool and will be further assessed and selected by relevant hiring managers.  The candidature will be valid for 6 months. Candidates who have been selected will be contacted directly by the relevant hiring manager. Those who were not selected for an internship in the current cycle will need to reapply to the internship programme when the new internship vacancies are released.
