Kisangani: Three Days of Commitment to Protect Rivers

From February 26 to 28, UNESCO organized an awareness campaign in Kisangani, Tshopo, as part of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP).

This three-day initiative brought together students, teachers, experts, and government representatives with a common goal: Protect our rivers and promote eco-friendly behaviors to preserve water resources.

The campaign targeted primary and secondary school students and teachers from five schools in Kisangani, encouraging them to preserve their environment and become key actors in river protection.

Through the "Heroes of Our Rivers" initiative, UNESCO highlighted two major issues:

  • Protecting health by avoiding water pollution risks.

  • Enhancing understanding of hydrological and environmental challenges.

The campaign also included field visits to observe the state of the Tshopo and Lindi rivers, involving around 80 participants, including 50 students, 23 teachers, 1 hydrology expert, and representatives from the provincial ministries of Education and Environment, along with the UNESCO team.

Participants observed the devastating effects of pollution: floods, diseases, fish disappearance, and threats to biodiversity. These observations led to fruitful discussions on sustainable solutions, such as waste recycling, to protect rivers and strengthen the IHP program in schools.

To sustain the initiative, UNESCO launched the creation of IHP clubs in schools. These clubs will maintain youth engagement and continue awareness and river protection actions.
