Latin American Holocaust education network to review curriculum challenges, 29-30 July 2015
UNESCO Office in Santiago and the Ministry of Education of Chile will host the Second Meeting of the UNESCO Latin American Network for Education about the Holocaust and other Genocides on 29 and 30 July.
This network was created in 2014 to foster regional exchanges of expertise and give impetus to national and regional initiatives to promote education about the Holocaust and other genocides and build capacity to teach about these difficult subjects.
The purpose of the second meeting is to review current challenges in curriculum revision, notably on the basis of UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute’s recent study, The International Status of Education about the Holocaust, which analyzes references to the Holocaust in curricula and textbooks from all over the world.
The meeting will also serve to review most recent initiatives taken at national level and to discuss the implementation of regional capacity-building projects.
Participating will be experts representing the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (Germany), Yad Vashem, Israel’s national remembrance authority, and the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (Argentina /United States of America).
The network is composed of senior civil servants representing the ministries of education of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
