Launch of the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023

鈥淯NESCO challenges gender norms, and promotes the shared control of decision-making and resources by women and men.鈥

The Council of Europe launched its new Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023 at the international conference, 鈥淕ender equality 鈥 paving the way鈥, held in Copenhagen from 3 to 4 May 2018. Organised in the framework of the Danish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, this conference addressed current and emerging challenges that prevent the achievement of substantive and full gender equality. Issues such as gender stereotypes and sexism, the role of men in the gender equality agenda, women in decision-making, human rights of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, as well as the way forward in implementing the new Gender Equality Strategy were discussed.

Ms. Saniye G眉lser Corat, UNESCO鈥檚 Director for Gender Equality, participated in the 鈥淧lanet 50-50 by 2030: Reality or Utopia鈥 session, and commended the effort and commitment demonstrated by the Council of Europe towards gender equality. Noting that UNESCO recognized Gender Equality as a Global Priority in 2008, she introduced UNESCO鈥檚 Gender Equality Action Plan 2014-2021 as well as its work on Priority Gender Equality in all  programme sectors.

Moderated by Marja Ruotanen, Director of Human Dignity, Equality and Sport Values of the Council of Europe, the panel also included Mr Asger Ryhl, Director of UN Women Nordic Liaison Office, Ms Irena Moozov谩, Director for Equality and Union Citizenship of the European Commission, Tanya Primiani, Senior Investment Policy Officer, World Bank Group and 脡dith Schratzberger-Vecsei, President of the European Women's Lobby.

Despite the noticeable progress of women鈥檚 rights in Europe in recent years, effective equality between women and men is far from being a reality. The adoption of the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023 shows political commitment to address current and emerging challenges and to remove barriers in achieving substantive and full gender equality.
