MONDIACULT 2022 | Culture as a global public good: a human-centered agenda for cultural policies

#CULTUREGLOBALPUBLICGOOD
Organizer(s):
Date: 29 September 2022, 2 - 3 p.m.
Venue: Los Pinos, Sal贸n Avila Camacho
Focal point: Ms Margherita Licata, Private Services Specialist 路 International Labour Organization at United Nations, licata@ilo.org
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the crucial role of culture in uplifting communities while fostering resilience and social cohesion, thus, underlining its nature as a global public good which should be upheld and promoted for a comprehensive, sustainable, and human-centred development. As the international community is urged to reshape public policies for the benefit of people and the planet, reasserting the transformative role of culture from a wide array of perspectives is fundamental.
This Inter-Agency Platform side event aims to inform this debate by envisioning a human-centred agenda for cultural policies revolving around: decent work, skills and innovation, and educational models to redress inequalities within and beyond the cultural sector; a more effective human-rights based governance system (from cultural rights to broader social and economic rights, such as Indigenous Peoples' rights); and the impact of culture across the development spectrum.
The discussion will also consider technology transformations and its implications for cultural diversity, the protection of intellectual property and the fair remuneration of cultural professionals. This comprehensive approach, made possible by the inputs provided by participating UN agencies, has the ambition to set out guidance on key actions to shape cultural policies and enable the sector to reclaim its vital societal role as a public good that builds communities, fosters cultural diversity and mutual understanding, and lifts people out of poverty and exclusion.
