Multilingualism in Cyberspace Conference: Indigenous Languages for Empowerment
The regional conference 鈥淢ultilingualism in Cyberspace: Indigenous Languages for Empowerment鈥 is being held on 26 and 27 November 2015 at the National University for Distance Education (UNED) in San Jos茅, Costa Rica, seeking to empower indigenous language speakers, particularly those from Latin America, with regards to the sustainable development agenda.
The objective of the conference is to formulate concrete recommendations for improving indigenous communities within its focus on information and communication technologies (ICT), promote multilingualism in cyberspace and contribute to the development of a roadmap for UNESCO's regional atlas of languages.
This is part of the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms related to: equal access to information; raising awareness of the importance of linguistic diversity for sustainable development; providing assistance and guidance to UNESCP Member States in the implementation of international, regional and national commitments related to the development of ICTs and languages; 鈥嬧媋nd promoting dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders in Latin America.
This event, organized by UNESCO in cooperation with Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED) and the Department of Intercultural Education of the Ministry of Public Education of Costa Rica (MEP), is attended by about 80 participants from different organizations including media, universities, indigenous students, language educators, United Nations System, regional and sub-regional development agencies, civil society, NGOs and intergovernmental organizations.
