‘My city my heritage’
Ten year old Arya Chavda presented today a print copy of her book on Ahmedabad 'my city my heritage', published in partnership with UNESCO, to Eric Falt, UNESCO New Delhi Director(.)
The book, which contains illustrations and poems by Arya, offers a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the old city of Ahmedabad including its unique monuments, mosques and temples.
“The awareness of young people is critical to ensure the safeguarding of heritage and I am delighted to see the efforts of Arya Chavda, the young artist and author of this wonderful book”, said Eric Falt. “I am sure it will inspire more young readers to explore heritage in their respective cities and to care for it.”
When asked what she would like to do eventually in her professional life, Arya promptly replied: “I would like to be work for UNESCO and contribute towards preserving our rich heritage”.
The historic city of Ahmedabad was declared as India’s first World Heritage City in 2017 when it was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Currently, India has 38 World Heritage sites. The cultural and architectural elements of the old city of Ahmedabad including its wooden architecture and distinctive ‘havelis’, ‘pols’ and ‘khadkis’ are remarkable examples of its rich cultural heritage.
