International; Literacy Day on September 8 will be celebrated in Nepal with a range of activities including a photography contest.

The women’s Literacy Open Photography contest recognizes the impact of powerful images in effecting social change. The contest aims to raise awareness on the complex and crucial issue of women’s literacy in Nepal by bringing together different visual perceptions of the theme.

Participants have until September 8 to submit their images. Photographs will be judged by a UNESCO panel and the decision will be based on the relevance to the theme and creativity. Winners will be awarded with cash prizes and certificates.

The contest is one of the series of activities planned for celebrating the day. Twice a day from 1 to 7 September a Public Service Announcement on literacy will be broadcast to 250 radio stations across the country. Special interactive programmes involving officials from District Education Offices or Non-formal Education Centre or Community Learning Centre mobilizers, and neo-literates will also be carried out in local languages through at least 5 radio stations from 5 different development regions.

In addition essay writing contests on the theme of literacy for Grade 9 -10 and Grade 11-12 students will be held in Dilibazaar, Kathmandu. The competition will receive 4 boys and 4 girls as representatives from each district of Lalitpur, Kathmandu and Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley. The winners will receive prize money and certificates and their writing will also be published.

A  has also been created for the occasion to provide a platform of awareness-raising, sharing and discussion on the issue of literacy with the general public.
