Nobel Prize-winners publish Declaration on Oceans in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science
Nobel laureates and other leading personalities from science, business and culture declared their concern with the health of the ocean through the Jury Declaration of the 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards, one of Spain鈥檚 most prestigious science prizes.
The 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards Jury Declaration highlighted the alarming state of the oceans, and urged all countries, the public and private actors 鈥渢o adopt immediately effective measures to counteract the deterioration of the health of the oceans and preserve the inherited natural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations鈥.
Consisting of 19 Nobel laureates and leading personalities from science, business and culture, the 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards Jury reaffirmed the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the IPCC Special report on Ocean and the Cryosphere (expected to be released in September 2019) as the best frameworks to mobilize action toward a more resilient and sustainable ocean.

The Rei Jaume I Awards are given annually by the Rei Jaume I Foundation to six researchers for their contributions in the areas of General Research, Medical Research, Environmental Protection, New Technologies, Urban Studies, and Economics. The Rei Jaume I Foundation is a private non-profit organization founded in 1996 by the Government of the Valencian Community and the Valencian Foundation for Advanced Studies (FVEA).
