Progress Achieved at Abu Mena

A joint visit UNESCO Cairo, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities representatives, and the Monk community of the Monastery of St Mena, visited the Abu Mena, World Heritage Site, a complex of ancient Christian ruins and the site of the St. Mena Monastery.
The delegation was given a tour of the monastery and the ruins, including the Basilica, the baptistery, and the archaeological complex of the ancient city of Abu Mena; discussed the advancement in the implementation of the corrective measures adopted by the World Heritage Committee, acknowledged the results of the progress made to assess the stability of the structures as well as the results of the successful interventions to dewatering of the core zone of the property.
The representative from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities thanked the collaboration established with the UNESCO Cairo office within the framework of the project Signage. Interpretation pathway is installed at the site and a significant part of the vegetation that used to cover the archaeological zone has been removed, which makes it possible to recognize the structures and their conservation status, to give early warning of the appearance of surface water, and to understand the site as a whole.
The delegation expressed their commitment to continue working together to further implement the management plan, to start preparing a capacity building series of training courses for curators and to strengthen the alliances with the Monk and with the farmers community.
