Promoting Culture and Creative Industries to 3 Millions in Yemen

As a part of the project, , implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union (EU), RNW Media created multimedia content to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage in Yemen. The content posted on , a platform run by RNW media, received approximately three million views, more than 129.5 thousand reactions, 17.7 thousand comments, and 11.4 thousand shares.
鈥淢y greetings to those who cultivate seeds of hope, create the will to live and make a better community,鈥 commented Ayoub AlHamadi, a Yemeni professor and a political figure based in Germany, on a song produced during the partnership. 鈥淵emen will never be something but the way we want it to be no matter how intense the eclipse is.鈥
The song, , celebrated Yemen鈥檚 cultural diversity. Taking six months to produce, the song went viral gaining more than 619 thousand views, 33 thousand comments, and five thousand shares. It was also shared across 14 TV channels and 20 radio stations in Yemen.
Based on a youth survey conducted in 2020 by UNESCO and RNW Media, many Yemenis support youth-promoting cultural heritage in Yemen. RNW produced six videos promoting youth initiatives, of whom four already received grants from UNESCO, in the cultural and creative industries.
The partnership also produced three videos using a game format, inviting Yemenis to guess pre-acted proverbs from , , and . To celebrate Yemen鈥檚 diversity, an actor from each province performed a proverb for the audience. For example, a Yemeni from Aden acted the proverb, 鈥渋f your friend is honey, don鈥檛 lick him all up.鈥 The three videos received a total engagement of 300 thousand views and one thousand comments.
To ensure the sustainability of the project, RNW Media and UNESCO trained Yemeni creatives in the cultural field. A workshop about digital engagement was held for ten Yemenis in Aden, and an was held to train 13 Yemenis in diaspora storytelling techniques. It covered topics such as, target audience mapping, the power of emotional messaging, story formats, and creating your own stories. The offline session received a rating of 8.2 out of ten, while the online training was rated 9.9 out of ten.
Overall, the project directly benefited 244 Yemenis, who received payment for creating content or attending workshops. RNW Media and UNESCO encouraged the youth to connect and participate in their society using the power of culture. The cooperation engaged Yemenis across different regions to celebrate their cultural diversity.
