Promoting Press Freedom as a Force for the Planet at the 2024 World Press Freedom Day Conference, in Santiago de Chile

On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day Celebration, hosted by the Republic of Chile, in Santiago de Chile, between May 2-4 2024, the President of the 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO, Amb. Simona-Mirela Miculescu, unveiled a Joint Declaration co-signed, at her initiative, by Presidents of UN Bodies.
On the occasion of a dedicated event moderated by Mr. Carsten von Nahmen (Managing Director, Deutsche Welle Akademie, Germany), Amb. Miculescu and Amb. Paula Narv谩ez Ojeda, President of the United Nations Economicand Social Council, unveiled a Joint Declaration which was also co-signed by H.E., Amb. Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly and H.E. Amb. Omar Zniber, President of the Human Rights Council.
The Joint Statement emphasized that 鈥淪tates have the obligation to respect, protect and promote human rights, including in all actions undertaken to address environmental challenges; and to take measures to protect the human rights of all, as recognized in various international instruments. Additional measures should also be taken for those particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation, noting the Framework Principles on Human Rights and the Environment.鈥
Furthermore, the Statement urged Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence, intimidation, threats and attacks against journalists and media workers, advocating for the strengthening of policies that promote free, independent, and pluralistic media, thereby fostering a vibrant and robust public sphere, a pillar of peaceful, just, inclusive, sustainable and prosperous societies.
As elected leaders of UN governing bodies, we have a key role to play and demonstrate, through concrete action, that the UN can walk the talk: listening to each other, engaging in constructive dialogue, and finding common ground. The joint statements by the heads of the governing bodies in NY, Paris, and Geneva, released over the latest editions of the World Press Freedom Day, have not only demonstrated a sense of shared values and common purpose; they have also enabled stronger coordination within the UN relevant HQs and the UN System as a whole on freedom of expression and safety of journalists, particularly in the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
