Proposed Working Group on Safety of Journalists’ Actors in Africa

Proposed Working Group on Safety of Journalists’ Actors in Africa

UNESCO Liaison Office to AU and UNECA in partnership with Media Rights Agenda, Article 19 and the Africa Freedom of Expression Network (AFEX), co-organised a consultative meeting on the proposed Working Group on Safety of Journalists in Africa at the margins of the 65th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Banjul Gambia.

The objective of the meeting was to request the ACHPR to put in place a mechanism for coordination between the ACHPR and the safety of journalists’ stakeholders in Africa, through a Working Group on Promotion and Protection of Journalism and Journalists Safety in Africa.

The purpose of the Working Group is to generate synergy and coordinate all the fragmented initiatives dealing with the safety of journalists in Africa, and contribute to the ACHPR Special Rapporteur’s mandate relating to the violation of journalists’ rights committed by the state and non-state actors in the African Union member states.

The decision by the ACHPR is expected in the next 27th Extraordinary Session of the ACHPR taking place from 19th February to 04 March 2019.
