On-the-Job-Training and Entrepreneurship Education to Youth Affected by the Syria Crisis in Jordan, Phase IV
TVET Students

Project duration: 2020-2022

Location: Jordan (Amman and Irbid)

List of Donor(s): Republic of Korea

Brief project overview:

UNESCO, in partnership with Luminus Technical University College, has been supporting Syrian refugee and vulnerable Jordanian youth with scholarships to access BTEC-level II-TVET programmes through four project phases since 2016. It provides access to TVET opportunities to vulnerable Jordanian and Syrian refugee youth through scholarships for an internationally accredited 8-month- 鈥淏TEC Level II-Diploma鈥, followed by facilitation of on-the-job-training opportunities. The project is designed to contribute to equipping youth with relevant skills to enhance their access to employment opportunities by providing them with quality certified TVET, complemented with coaching and mentoring support during on-the-job-training. An entrepreneurship course was also piloted to support development of entrepreneurial skills and prospects for business projects conceived by students.

Overall it aims to empower young vulnerable men and women affected by the Syria crisis in Jordan and increase their employability prospects. Under phase IV finalized in August 2022, 166 students (74 Syrians; 92 Jordanians; 92 females; 74 males) completed an internationally-accredited TVET course (in Business, Information Technology and Creative Media Production). These students were also placed in one-month on-the-job training (all provided with laptop devices and internet bundles, which also contributed to reduce digital divide among students) with a high achievement rate of 150 students completing the OJT. Entrepreneurship course was also provided to 29 Syrian and Jordanian students with two female students being granted small seed funding to launch their home-based business ideas.

Since its inception in 2016, a total of 761 students (440 Syrians, 321 Jordanians; 428 Females, 333 Males) have benefitted from the programme. This programme has been a good practice in terms of equitable continuity of education, reducing female drops out and responding to the impact of COVID-19, notably through the use of blended/e-learning approaches.
