At the 24th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers, held online on 4 February 2021, ASEAN Tourism Ministers voiced their commitment to boosting sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism in the region. The meeting resulted in the adoption of the Phnom Penh Declaration on a More Sustainable, Inclusive, and Resilient ASEAN Tourism, developed by Cambodia. Ministers also encouraged ASEAN National Tourism Organizations (NTOs) to develop work programmes for its implementation and to promote the ASEAN Tourism Recovery. Similarly, the updated ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016-2025 was endorsed, which outlines the strategic direction of future cooperation in the tourism sector, including regional corridors, and circuits and product packages for cultural and heritage tourism.
Amidst the fluctuating situation of the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, countries in the region have taken steps to revive the cultural tourism sector and support tourism-dependent economies to recoup the millions of dollars in losses racked up throughout 2020. Australia and Singapore, for instance, are discussing the possibility of a “green lane” between the two countries with no 14-day isolation requirement upon arrival. The Indonesian Government says that it is currently drawing up plans for a “travel bubble” with four countries - China, South Korea, Japan and Australia - to help revive the country’s tourism sector.
