Project
Rise for Nature

This initiative was born in 2012 from the desire to preserve Cameroon’s biodiversity, one of the richest in the world, to act against climate change and to develop sustainable livelihoods with communities.
This local initiative has grown into a national programme. Its objective is to mobilise and involve local people for effective biodiversity conservation and protection through awareness raising, education, advocacy and the creation of community-led structures. Its principle is to build on indigenous cultures and practices that are environmentally friendly and sustainable, not to import solutions that do not fit the local context.
An inspiring impact
1,549 community biodiversity protection and conservation education, advocacy and control groups have been created, trained, legalized and operationalized across the 10 regions of Cameroon. 109 village and community forest management committees and forest conservation management plans have been designed and adopted for local implementation in the conservation of biodiversity. In 214 rainforest communities lacking viable environmentally friendly economic opportunities, the project has trained households in beekeeping or organic gardening, with at least 24,600 households provided with alternative sources of income, thereby reducing pressure on the environment
Rise for Nature was the first project in Cameroon to win the UNESCO-Japan Prize for Education for Sustainable Development. It still inspires many projects across Africa.
