Second Annual Meeting of UNESCO Chairs in India held in Pune

In an effort to strengthen linkages with and among the UNESCO Chairs in India, UNESCO New Delhi in partnership with the MIT World Peace University organized the Second Annual meeting of UNESCO Chairs in India on 9-10 December 2019 in Pune.

 

The meeting was hosted by Prof. Vishanath D Karad, who holds the UNESCO Chair in Peace, Human Rights and Democracy. Welcoming the delegates, he said, 鈥渋t is a matter of great pleasure and pride for all of us that the Second Annual meeting of UNESCO Chair holders is organized at MIT-WPU, a laboratory dedicated to humanity and world peace, and home of the world鈥檚 largest dome鈥. Prof Karad appealed all Chair holders to work in a spirit of unity, shared humanity and cohesion to promote the ideals of UNESCO, of achieving world peace, through the promotion of a culture of peace, and through a value-based universal education system.

 

Eric Falt, Director of UNESCO New Delhi, thanked the UNESCO Chairs for their contribution to the fulfilment of UNESCO鈥檚 mandate throughout the year. He mentioned the recent appointment of G S Rawat, from the Wildlife Institute of India, as UNESCO Chair on Natural Heritage Conservation. Mr Falt also drew the attention to the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and invited all Chairs to contribute with the organization of their own events.

 

The UNESCO Chairs programme involves over 700 Institutions in 116 countries to promote international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative network.
