Shadow Theater: Art and Environmental Awareness

With the aim of raising awareness among local communities and visitors about the importance of biodiversity conservation, the Shadow Theater Project for Sustainability Education is emerging as an innovative environmental education strategy in the Cerro Plateado Biological Reserve and its buffer zone.
Through artistic performances inspired by the region's culture and nature, this initiative seeks to promote awareness of ecosystem protection and current environmental challenges. In 2025, the project aims to reach approximately 400 people through performances in local communities and educational institutions within the Podocarpus El Cóndor Biosphere Reserve.

During its implementation this year, the project successfully impacted 325 people, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Education, the Zonal Coordination 7, local educational districts, and the backing of the decentralized autonomous governments of Nangaritza and Yacuambi. Additionally, logistical support from the ArcoÃris Ecological Foundation facilitated access to more communities.
Shadow theater, as a communication methodology, enables the transmission of key environmental conservation messages in an accessible, emotional, and interactive manner. More than just a performance, this project has become a transformative tool that strengthens cultural identity and fosters a deeper commitment to environmental conservation in the Amazon region of southern Ecuador.
Each shadow projected on the stage reflects our history, our land, and our duty to protect it. When art and environmental awareness come together, the message becomes unforgettable.
