Strengthened intergovernmental cooperation at the first workshop of the ´light touch´ taskforce on Safety of Journalists

Conceived during the First Global Conference on Media Freedom hosted in London in 2019, this informal network of thematic and regional IGOs seeks to deepen collaboration and cooperation to promote the safety of journalists. Participants reiterated their commitment to advance the coalition-based approach of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, which marks its 10th Anniversary this year.
In his opening address, UNESCO Assistant Director-General, Tawfik Jelassi underlined that much has been achieved in the 10 years since the UN Plan of Action was adopted but also reiterated the continued need of the close continued cooperation between many different stakeholders, which were represented at the meeting.
The goal of the network is, amongst others, to deepen collaboration on activities strengthening the safety of journalists, exchanging good practices, enabling informed and coordinated responses to urgent individual cases or ad-hoc situations, coordinating on development and implementation of National Action Plans on safety of journalists, promoting a gender-sensitive approach and analysis on the safety of journalists
The Global Conference, held in Tallinn was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia together with Estonian Institute of Human Rights. It gathered around 50 members of the Media Freedom Coalition, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations and civil society organizations actively working on freedom of expression and safety of journalists. The first such conference was hosted by the United Kingdom in 2019 and the second jointly by Canada and Botswana in 2021.
