Tajikistan Outlines National Actions to Strengthen Adaptation to Cryosphere Changes

A national workshop was held in Hisor, Tajikistan on 24–25 April 2025 as part of the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO regional project “Strengthening the resilience of Central Asian countries by enabling regional cooperation to assess glacio-nival systems to develop integrated methods for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.” The workshop aimed to define country-specific priorities for improving cryosphere monitoring and resilience in the face of climate change.
This was the second in a series of national workshops held across Central Asia, following the first event in Kazakhstan earlier in April. The Tajikistan workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, scientific institutions, academia, and civil society to contextualize regional priorities and translate them into national action.
Participants focused on identifying actionable steps to enhance glacier, snow and permafrost monitoring, strengthen data sharing, develop knowledge products, and build institutional capacity. The workshop facilitated the formation of a multi-institutional working group tasked with further developing these initiatives at the national level. Discussions also addressed the alignment of future actions with international frameworks, including the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The series of workshops continues in Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic and is expected to conclude in June.
