Teachers – have your say about education for sustainable development and global citizenship

Teachers have a crucial role in readying learners for climate change, sustainable development and global citizenship.

UNESCO is conducting a of teachers in partnership with Education International to find out how they are integrating and into their teaching.

In order to empower learners, educators themselves need to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours required for transformative education at the core of these concepts. UNESCO studies have consistently shown teacher training needs to be strengthened to achieve their goals.

The survey of primary and secondary teachers will help to fill an important data gap by providing information from the perspective of one of the key actors in education systems worldwide – teachers themselves.

This includes teaching topics such as climate change, biodiversity, sustainable consumption and production, human rights and gender equality and respect for cultural diversity, across the curriculum and integrating them into wider school communities. It also asks how learning competencies related to ESD and GCED, such as systems thinking, collaboration, strategic and critical thinking, and complex problem-solving skills are assessed.

You will have until 25 April to respond to the survey, which should take about half an hour to complete and is available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kiswahili, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

The results of the survey will be presented to policymakers, civil society and experts and practitioners at UNESCO’s next 5th Global Forum on ESD and GCED, which will be hosted by the Republic of Korea in September 2021. It will help assess the extent to which the learning objectives, topics and pedagogical approaches promoted by ESD and GCED are being mainstreamed in education systems and how they can help to build resilience going forward.

The survey is being conducted as a part of the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal 4 Target 7 of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, which strives for all learners to acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development.
