From theory to practice : UNESCO launches YouthMobile phase 2 in Madagascar

UNESCO’s YouthMobile initiative in Madagascar started its phase 2 intitled Digital Entrepreneurship Training in late February 2023, in partnership with Orange. The winning team of phase 1 followed over 183 hour training and mentoring sessions to develop “Intimacy”, an application focused on women’s sexual health, rights and laws, through four sections : tips, diseases, contact with experts and juridical information.

During phase 1, 164 young women from across Madagascar followed a 3-week intensive online training on coding, design thinking, ethics and Artificial Intelligence, SDGs and technologies, which ended with a national contest. Four teams were then selected to participate in the accelerated programme that characterizes phase 2.

"This training will allow us to see how far our project can go and how we will be able to set up the elements on the market. Our next objective is to focus on putting the app online and to show that we are here to stay. We divided tasks within the team according to our special interests and skills. What has changed for me is the vision I have of myself and others. I realized I am capable to be an entrepreneur. As a team, we want to contribute to Madagascar’s development.”

The three other beneficiary teams will start a 32-hour training program in March.

Launched in 2021, YouthMobile addresses one of the two UNESCO’s global priorities, Gender. Here, the gender gap is addressed through the young women’s digital skills acquisition. The project, made possible through a local partnership with Orange Digital Center, highlights the transformative power that the conception and the development of mobile apps for sustainable development has on youth.
