Tribute to Claude Lanzmann
"Claude Lanzmann, an exceptional movie director, made the inaccessible accessible to us through his works such as Shoah, Sobibor, The Karski Report, The Last of the Unjust, and most recently, The Four Sisters, that he had done us the honour of projecting at UNESCO last January, on the occasion of the International Shoah Remembrance Day.
Claude Lanzmann’s cinematographic work shows the extent to which works of art contribute to the construction of our collective memory, giving each story its own resonance, its own voice. It is the work of artists to restore these voices, and I wish to commend Claude Lanzmann’s unwavering determination to fight in favour of memory and historical research.
In addition to profoundly marking the history of cinema, he was also a journalist, a philosopher, the chief editor of the French journal Les Temps Modernes, and an uncompromising and passionate committed writer.
I wish to express my sincere condolences to his family – that of the cinema and his loved ones."
