UNESCO 40th General Conference adopts a new global framework for Education for Sustainable Development for 2020-2030

The 40th UNESCO General Conference (12-27 November 2019) adopted the new global framework on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD for 2030) for the period of 2020-2030.
The global framework for implementation of ESD is the follow up to the Global Action Programme on ESD (GAP, 2015-2019).
aims to build a more just and sustainable world through strengthening ESD and contributing to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The framework will focus on integrating ESD and the 17 SDGs into policies, learning environments, capacity building of educators, empowerment and mobilization of youth, and local level action.
The new builds on the emphasis given to the role of ESD by UN General Assembly Resolution 72/222 which noted ESD as 'an integral element of SDG4 on Education and a key enabler of all the other SDGs.’ It aims to reorient education and learning to contribute to sustainable development and to strengthen education and learning in all activities that promote sustainable development.
The ESD for 2030 framework was also presented to the 74th session of the UN General Assembly as part of the , which was examined in its Second Committee and welcomed by the members of that Committee.
To officially launch the ESD for 2030 framework, the will be organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner of the Ministry. It will take place from 2 to 4 June 2020 in Berlin, Germany.
