UNESCO Amman Celebrates International Literacy Day

UNESCO supports International Literacy Day events nationwide.

Amman, 8 September 2015 鈥 Since 1966, has been held each year on September 8th. It is on this day that UNESCO reminds the world of the status of literacy and adult learning. In Jordan, International Literacy Day events were held country wide in public and private schools and in the framework of informal education projects.

On International Literacy Day 2015, public schools in Jordan celebrated International Literacy Day with school assemblies where speeches were given on the importance of literacy for lifelong wellbeing, and literacy as a national priority. At Tla鈥 Ali. Liwa鈥 Jamia鈥 School, the morning assembly speech explained: 鈥淚nternational Literacy Day presents the opportunity to spread awareness among nations of the importance of education. We in Jordan take pride in our Hashemite leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II who has prioritized education for the nation. Until now, 4,079 centres for literacy have been opened across the country.鈥

UNESCO鈥檚 partners for the EU funded project, 鈥Sustaining Quality Education & Promoting Skills Development for Young Syrian Refugees in Jordan,鈥 also conducted literacy related activities. In Zaatari Camp, UNESCO鈥檚 implementing partner, War Child UK, explained to the children about the importance of literacy, after which each child made a bookmark and received a storybook as a gift. In Ghor El Safi, the site of UNESCO鈥檚 project 鈥淓mpowering Rural Women in the Jordan Valley,鈥 funded by 鈥楧rosos鈥 secondary school girls spent time reading to primary school students.

This year鈥檚 worldwide celebration was dedicated to exploring critical links and synergy between literacy and the future Sustainable Development Goals under the theme 鈥淟iteracy and Sustainable Societies鈥. The future Sustainable Development Goals will be adopted during the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.
