Through the project “Train My Generation: Gabon 5000”, UNESCO and the mobile phone company Airtel Gabon aim to provide scientific and entrepreneurial training through ICTs to thousands of young Gabonese men and women over a period of three years. This initiative marks the first-ever partnership of the Organization with a private company based in sub-Saharan Africa.

Airtel Gabon has invested 2.4 billion CFA francs to finance the programme, which will be implemented by UNESCO over three years. The programme is organized around four major themes: introduction to computers, tutoring via distance-learning (e-learning), career guidance for youth entrepreneurship, and assistance for finding scholarships in specialized fields. The first phase of the project was launched on 4 May 2015 at the African Institute of Informatics (IAI) in Libreville, Gabon.

At least 4,400 young people aged between 17 and 35 stand to benefit from this first phase, which aims to ease their transition to the workplace. It will be offered in training centres created in selected schools, in each of the nine provinces of Gabon. The training has been accredited by the African Institute of Informatics (l’Institut Africain d’Informatique, or IAI), which will deliver various levels of certification in fields relevant to youth needs as well as the workplace.

Among those present at the launch on 4 May 2015 were Ida Reteno Assonouet, Minister of National Education, Higher and Technical Education and Vocational Training, President of the Gabonese National Commission for UNESCO, Felix Loïteohin Ye, Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Yaoundé and UNESCO Representative to Central African Republic, and Hervé Olivier Njapoum, CEO of Airtel Gabon SA.
