UNESCO and the Government of Flanders (Belgium) reaffirm their commitment to close cooperation

On 11 December 2017, Ms Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, met with Mr Geert Bourgeois, Minister-President of the Government of Flanders, at UNESCO Headquarters.
On that occasion, the Director-General thanked the Government of Flanders for its commitment to all UNESCO’s programmes and for its important support for the Organization’s work on cultural and natural heritage, particularly in conflict areas, as well as in education and the sciences.
The Director-General and the Minister agreed on the fundamental role of education for development, particularly in strengthening the empowerment of adolescent girls and young women.
The Minister also affirmed the relevance of UNESCO’s action in view of its cross-cutting mandate, and his wish to further strengthen cooperation with the Organization, particularly in the context of the 20th anniversary of exchanges between Flanders and UNESCO, in 2018.
