Amman, Jordan – Ahead of the highly anticipated Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week Feature Conference, scheduled for October 30-31, 2024, in Amman, UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan are collaborating with the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) to host a series of essential pre-conference workshops. These workshops, set for October 29th at the JMI premises, involve collaborations with prominent Jordanian universities and media organizations, and will be attended by around 100 students and young people from across Jordan, including participants from the Crown Princess Foundation and the Lazord Foundation Fellowship Program.

The Jordan Media Institute, playing a pivotal role in these efforts, will kick off the day with an introductory session on the basics of MIL, designed to ground participants in the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to navigate the media landscape effectively. Following this, Yarmouk University will conduct a workshop on using AI tools and mobile apps to generate innovative media content. Zarqa University will then offer essential fact-checking training, vital for navigating today’s quick-paced information flows.

The sessions will continue with a cybersecurity workshop by the University of Jordan, where participants will learn strategies to protect themselves and their communities from cyber threats. Petra University will follow up with a presentation on the latest AI technologies for detecting and countering misinformation.

Health misinformation will be tackled by the Royal Health Awareness Society, discussing its impact on public health. A collaborative session with Zaha Cultural Center and Greater Amman Municipality will demonstrate how MIL can improve the quality of digital journalism targeting adolescents, with Zaha e-journal as a case study.

Additionally, the role of podcasts in enhancing MIL awareness and skills will be highlighted by the Musajjel Network. There will also be a discussion on MIL's role in supporting climate action, emphasizing the connection between media literacy and environmental issues, hosted by the Sawt project and Internews.

The Jordan Media Institute will allocate a dedicated training hour for journalists planning to cover the main events of the conference on October 30 and 31. This session will review the conference program, analyze its sessions, and the concepts and skills it will address. This training will help journalists focus on the important outcomes of the conference, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of their media coverage.

The anticipation and enthusiasm from JMI’s team, students from various regions of Jordan, and academic institutions have been impressive. These workshops offer practical skills and opportunities for students and young professionals to engage directly with seasoned experts in the field. Universities across Jordan have shown strong support, recognizing the urgency of integrating these topics into educational curricula and their crucial role in empowering a new generation of informed citizens.
