UNESCO and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport Celebrate World Teachers’ Day

On Monday, 5 October, UNESCO celebrated World Teachers’ Day with the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh. Nearly hundred participants from MoEYS’s central departments, Provincial Offices of Education, Khmer Teachers Association and development organizations, gathered to commemorate the occasion.
This year, World Teachers’ Day national theme is “Smart Teachers for Digital Education”, which is in line with the international theme, “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”. In his speech, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia, Mr. Sardar Umar Alam, highlighted the remarkable leadership role teachers played during the COVID-19 crisis and how the issue of teacher leadership and their rights is critical because of their contributions in providing remote learning, supporting vulnerable populations, re-opening schools and mitigating learning gaps. Mr. Sardar Umar Alam urged to protect education financing, stating that investment in teachers will provide a high return on investment for Cambodia as the country aims to build back better.

During the event, His Excellency (H.E.) Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport thanked teachers, parents, guardians, community members, education officials and development partners for their hard work in overcoming challenges to provide education to Cambodian students during this difficult time. In his speech, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron recognized the key role of teachers in implementing education reform and how teacher working conditions are central to reform implementation. In his keynote address on “Smart Teachers for Digital Education”, he also emphasized the pivotal role of school directors in creating a positive teaching and learning environment.
