UNESCO and NCHM train professionals in optimizing river water quality monitoring in Bhutan

UNESCO New Delhi in partnership with National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology, Bhutan and Bhutan National Commission for UNESCO organized a workshop on 19 and 20 June 2023 at Thimphu, Bhutan towards optimizing river water quality monitoring in Bhutan.
The technical workshop comprising lectures and hands on activities was designed to help participants learn approaches and network designing for planning and optimizing river monitoring; identifying and interpreting key indicators (physical, chemical, biological) of river health; conventional and modern techniques of river water quality assessment; achievement and learning of India鈥檚 river monitoring programme; and understanding different monitoring protocols according to current best practices.
A total of 20 participants from different government organizations working in the field of water and sanitation attended the training delivered by Dr Uday Bhonde, Senior Programme Specialist in Water, and Environment Vertical at National Institute of Urban Affairs, India and Mr Peeyush Gupta, Real-time Information Specialist, National Mission for Clean Ganga, Government of India.
The workshop was organized as part of the project supported under the 'UNESCO and Republic of Korea' partnership. The project aims at building the capacity of Bhutan to monitor river water quality to help reduce risk to water security in urban centers and improve their adaptability to climate change.
Launched in November 2017 and funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea, the 鈥楿NESCO and Republic of Korea鈥 partnership aims to cooperate for development of policies to support countries in Africa and Asia to reduce their vulnerability of water to climate change and enhance their water security through the programme 鈥淪ustainable Water Security for Human Settlements in Developing Countries under Climate Change鈥.
