UNESCO and UN Women join efforts to promote gender equality through education
Both executive heads concurred that any opportunity to intensify the collaboration in this field should not be missed.
In the margins of the 58th session of the commission on the Status of Women in New York, Director-General Irina Bokova had a meeting with the Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to discuss the consolidation of the two Organizations鈥 efforts to promote girls' and women鈥檚 education as the foundation for women鈥檚 empowerment and gender equality.
Irina Bokova underlined the need to ensure that gender equality is mainstreamed throughout the new post 2015 Development agenda and that all sustainable development goals are linked. In this context, she stated that education is the main foundation for achieving gender equality.
Ms Mlambo Ngcuka highlighted the UN Women鈥檚 position on the Post 2015 Development agenda that places a strong emphasis on education in order to ensure that women get decent jobs and that structural barriers to the empowerment of women, including lack of access to quality education, are removed.
In addition, tackling violence against girls and women was outlined as a main issue, as well as the participation of women in leadership and the decision making process.
The Director-General and the UN Women Executive Director also discussed specific projects, including teachers training, ICTs use in education delivery, TVET and STEM for girls.
