UNESCO Cairo celebrates the International Day of Museums success

UNESCO Cairo, in close collaboration with Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA) and the National Committee for Egyptian Museums (ICOM Egypt), set up a seminar as part of a consultation process to lay the groundwork for opportunities for collaboration between institutions. As a result of yesterday's discussions, it is possible to establish a preliminary list of priorities that will allow UNESCO in Egypt to accompany the work and initiatives of museum professionals and associated initiatives. The recommendations will be incorporated into a preliminary action plan.
The world has been observing International Museum Day on 18 May each year since 1977. This year, UNESCO Cairo, thanks to very close cooperation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities-Museums Sector at the MoTA and with the ICOM Egypt, organized a full-day seminar to raise awareness about the role of these institutions as key players in the implementation of national standard as per UNESCO Cultural conventions ratified by Egypt.
The event was launched by opening remarks of the three institutions.
(...) MoTA developed many museums in partnership with UNESCO Cairo, namely the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), Museum of Islamic Art, Gayer Anderson Museum, and Manial Palace Museum with the support of the Italian Government.
Dr Nuria Sanz, Head of UNESCO Cairo, said:
The activity (…) and deepen the reflection on the contribution of the museums to the effective implementation of the UNESCO Culture Conventions, Recommendations, and the MONDIACULT declarations that paved the way for the full integration of cultural conventions as a global public good in the post-2030 Agenda for inclusive and sustainable development
UNESCO's Culture Programme is firmly anchored in the cultural conventions which provide the principles for cultural policy development and serve as a platform for international cooperation in protecting heritage and fostering creativity for sustainable development. They establish a holistic cultural governance system based on human rights and shared values. Through its Culture Unit, UNESCO Cairo assists Egypt and Sudan with promoting and implementing the UNESCO culture conventions through policy support, capacity building, and partnership development. From cherished historical monuments and museums to living heritage practices and contemporary art forms, culture enriches our lives in countless ways and helps build inclusive, innovative, and resilient communities.
The three institutions agreed on launching a platform/community of best practices awards to promote the enhanced integration of the culture sector (heritage, museums, arts, and cultural/creative economy) in Egypt's national strategy and plans for collection management, conservation, sustainable development, and climate actions.
