UNESCO – CMAS Dive for Peace Day in Dakhla
In order to participate in the UNESCO Dive for Peace Day, the Dakhla Peace Organization, the World Underwater Federation CMAS and the Ministry of Culture of Morocco organized a dive to a famous World War I shipwreck, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, on 24 October 2014.
The Meeting of States Parties to the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage called for special remembrance and scientific activities. These events were devoted to underwater cultural heritage from World War I, on the occasion of the conflict’s centenary. In this regard, a special public event “Dive for Peace Day” was organized worldwide in 2014. It was open to and supported by dive clubs and national institutions.
The visits to significant submerged World War I sites shall call attention to the importance of the protection of underwater cultural heritage sites, which are threatened by international conflicts. They also remind humanity of the need to preserve peace.
