UNESCO condemns the destruction of the Palmyra Funerary Towers

According to ASOR Cultural Heritage Initiative鈥檚 Special Report: Update on the Situation in Palmyra, the Valley of the Tombs located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmyra, was targeted at different times between June and August 2015. Satellite images confirm the destruction of seven funerary towers.

These multi-storey sandstone monuments dating to the Roman era figured among the most representative and evocative monuments of the archaeological site of Palmyra. The recently looted and destroyed funerary busts figured amongst their most important features.

This destruction adds to the recently destroyed Baal Shamin and Bel temples in Palmyra.
