UNESCO conducts a masterclass on diplomacy

On 4 August, UNESCO New Delhi conducted a masterclass for budding young filmmakers from across the globe to develop their cognizance of the soft skill of diplomacy, as part of the International Youth Media Summit. The masterclass was intended to give the youth some first-hand insight into diplomacy in the practical sense. To be on the front-line of any debate or discussion, one must hone the skill of diplomacy. It’s tough standing your ground and speaking your mind, especially when it is about the issue you are most passionate about.
By considering multiple perspectives and comparing competing narratives, Juan Pablo Ramirez Miranda, UNESCO New Delhi Head of Social and Human Sciences, took the participants through the outcomes and challenges of diplomacy by stating examples of how UNESCO builds diplomatic platforms.
At the masterclass, the central role played by multilateralism in diplomacy was discussed with examples of how in some cases multilateral diplomacy provides the best chance for successful negotiation. In this sense, the role of the United Nations in international diplomacy was highlighted and the central role of diplomatic engagement to devise solutions to global problems was reiterated.
During the exchange with the young filmmakers, Juan Pablo Ramirez Miranda emphasised that youth are key stakeholders in achieving the He stressed on how using their skill of diplomacy will help them navigate through the process of global transformations. Ultimately diplomacy is all about winning hearts and minds. The key to successful diplomacy is engaging minds and creating networks. It is hoped that fueled by the power of media, these young filmmakers can step up and help spread the message of the UN to the wider public.
