He was a prominent emissary of the First Nations and founder of the Buffalo Trust, a non-profit foundation dedicated to restoring and preserving Native American heritage and cultural traditions. The foundation aims to empower young American Indians to reclaim their heritage, define their cultural identity, and promote intercultural relations.

Mr Momaday's lifelong work has been a source of inspiration for UNESCO's mission in the field of preservation of indigenous cultures and intercultural dialogue. It was in this capacity that he chaired the UNESCO international symposium entitled "Indigenous Identities: Oral and Written Expressions and New Technologies", held at UNESCO Headquarters in 2001.

Navarre Scott Momaday died on 24 January 2024 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
