UNESCO Director-General condemns the killing of journalist Juan Dayang in the Philippines

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Juan Dayang in the city of Kalibo, in Aklan province, Philippines, on 29 April.

I condemn the killing of Juan Dayang and call for a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated as it only emboldens those who seek to silence journalists and prevent them from fulfilling their crucial role of informing the public.

Juan 鈥淛ohnny鈥 Dayang was a veteran journalist and publisher of the Philippines Graphic Magazine, and of the defunct Headline Manila daily newspaper. He also previously headed the Publishers Association of the Philippines Incorporated, and the Manila Overseas Press Club. He was reportedly shot dead through the window of his house by an unidentified gunman.
