UNESCO Director-General deeply saddened by passing of Rony Koven, staunch advocate of UNESCO鈥檚 mandate for media freedom
On behalf of UNESCO, and in her own name, the UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, expressed deep condolences to the friends and family of Rony Koven, after his passing on 30 October, 2015.
鈥淩ony was one of the world鈥檚 greatest champions for freedom of expression and media freedoms,鈥 said Irina Bokova. 鈥淗e was a man of tremendous moral stature, an outstanding advocate in standing up for the human rights and dignity of women and men across the world.鈥
A journalist with a long and distinguished career, Rony Koven was an ardent ambassador for freedom of expression and press freedoms, including as the European Representative of the World Press Freedom Committee. In this capacity, Rony Koven worked closely in support of UNESCO鈥檚 action to defend freedom of expression and to support journalists across the world.
鈥淭he unique experience and contribution of Rony Koven will be sorely missed by UNESCO.鈥
