UNESCO Director-General meets the Vice Premier of China, Ms. Liu Yandong

On 20 October, the Director-General met with Her Excellency Ms Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, on the occasion of the UNESCO Creative Cities Summit, being held in Beijing.

The Vice Premier started by noting the deep partnership that exists between UNESCO and China, embodied in landmark events over the last few years -- on technical and vocational education and training (Shanghai), on cuture for development (Hangzhou), on creative and learning cities -- as well as in cooperation to support States in Africa to promote quality education for all.

She expressed thanks to the Director-General for her leadership as well as her forward-looking and innovative initiatives, and she pledged the consistent support of China to UNESCO in moving forward.

The Director-General thanked the Vice Premier for her engaged support to UNESCO and also for the leadership of China in supporting the implementation of its mandate across the world and in the Organisation itself.

She highlighted in particular the strength of the message by H.E. President Xi Jinping, recorded for the first anniversary of the UN Secretary-General's Global Education First Initiative, which UNESCO is steering forward. This message was warmly received by all, and it underlined China's commitment to building a learning society, providing quality education to all.

The Vice Premier agreed, stating that education is a foundation of all Chinese policy. In this context, she underlined the importance of the Creative Cities Summit and the International Learning Cities Conference for sustainable and all-rounded human development. The Diector-General agreed, noting that cities are built on ideas and innovation as much as infrastrucure.

The Vice Premier welcomed UNESCO's support to China in key areas of its modernsation drive. The Director-General looked forward to deepening cooperation in movng ahead.

The Director-General met also with Honourable Mr Wang Anshun, Mayor of the Beijing Municipal Government.鈥
