In continuation of the UNESCO YouthMobile Initiative created in 2014, UNESCO Abuja entered into a collaborative agreement with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in Nigeria to empower 400 youth, to develop mobile applications.  

Speaking at the launch of the Project in Abuja, the Regional Director Office Abuja, Yao Ydo reiterated UNESCO’s commitment, “to contribute towards the building of inclusive knowledge societies, by enhancing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) skills and open solutions to empower youth, to develop mobile applications that resolve identified local issues of sustainable development.”

In his remarks, FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, commended UNESCO for the intervention towards the training. He charged the recipients of the training to be serious, saying “for those of you who are in the first batch of this training, you are lucky because you are in good hands. You are going to be trained on a combination of activities done over a number of years in many countries. Obviously the experience of UNESCO with each training programme is going to be imparted to you, and of course, the latest technology in the area.”

“This has become necessary given the evolution and the transformative effect of ICT and its potential to propel development and create a knowledge-based economy. More importantly, it has become necessary in order to build a science, technology and innovation system that will drive a Competitive Knowledge Economy by 2020,’’ he added.

The project is expected to train 400 unemployed youth, especially women, for 8 – 10 months with skills on ICTs competence development (Learning-to-Code). The key objective of the project is to empower the beneficiaries the necessary skills for better opportunities to effectively use their skills for meaningful employment.

Other partners present at the official launch are the Microsoft of Nigeria and Samsung Nigeria.
