UNESCO invites to a worldwide debate in the International Education Day
The initiative Futures of Education aims at catalyzing an open debate for people from around the world to reimagine the future of education
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education. This recognition is also an opportunity to celebrate education鈥檚 importance and its fundamental role for well-being and sustainable development. The theme for this year International Day is 鈥淟earning for people, planet, prosperity, and peace鈥 and calls attention to the need to rethink education from a more integrated and humanistic approach.
A recent UNESCO report on education reveals that 262 million children worldwide do not attend school and 617 million children and adolescents cannot read or do basic math. Furthermore, less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete secondary school and some 4 million youth refugees are out of school. Besides, there is still a large gender gap in a scenario where a much larger number of girls than boys face difficulties.
To rethink the future of education worldwide, UNESCO launched the initiative Futures of Education. This initiative aims at catalyzing ideas and serving as an open debate to strengthen a common agenda on education. to learn more and to join the debate.
