UNESCO joins the celebration of 70th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Timor-Leste

UNESCO, in Timor-Leste, joined the Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 鈥淪茅rgio Vieira de Mello鈥 Human Rights Award, organized by the Office of the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Provedoria for Human Rights and Justice, and the partners.

10 December, known as the Human Rights Day, commemorates the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which sets out the fundamental human rights to be universally protected. This year marks its 70th Anniversary, since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it on 10 December 1948.

The event was held at the Presidential Palace, involving the parliament, government, diplomatic corps, NGOs, as well as the 鈥淪茅rgio Vieira de Mello鈥 Human Rights Award recipients. This award, initiated by the former President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Mr. Jos茅 Ramos-Horta, was given to three citizens and three organizations, by the President of the Republic, H.E. Mr. Francisco Guterres L煤-Olo.

The event was accompanied by booth exhibitions, demonstrating positive stories of human rights in thematic areas, where UNESCO took part in 鈥榚ducation鈥 and 鈥榚nvironment鈥 booths, together with the sister UN Agencies.
