UNESCO Participates in BarilleFa: The First National Festival of Farsi Braille Writing

On 17 December 2019, the Officer in Charge of the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office, Mr Cvetan Cvetkovski, addressed the closing ceremony of the 鈥淔irst National Festival of Farsi Braille Writing: BrailleFa鈥 which was organized by the National Library and Archives Organization of Iran.

The 鈥淏railleFa鈥 aimed at raising awareness in the society and among the concerned entities on the importance of Farsi Braille writing, on the challenges that Farsi Braille writing has been facing in the past two decades, fostering preservation and promotion of Farsi Braille education as well as reinforcing its importance among blind and visually impaired people.

In his opening remarks, Mr Cvetan Cvetkovski talked about UNESCO鈥檚 efforts in standardization of the usage of Braille writing and said: 鈥淔rom the very beginning, UNESCO鈥檚 vision has been the creation of knowledge societies that are inclusive, pluralistic, equitable, open and participatory for all citizens. Thus, all UNESCO鈥檚 programmes in education, culture, science and communication aim to promote a culture of inclusion.鈥

In his remarks, Dr Hosseini talked about the inclusive approaches in the policies of the Ministry of Education and Dr Boroujerdi presented a set of recommendations in order to promote the usage of Braille. The recommendations included: Integration of the Braille writing into technology through supporting the creation of new hardware and software products, Awareness raising in the society through Radio and Television programs; Supporting the provision of computers equipped with Braille writing for blind and visually impaired people and their inclusion in insurance services, considering their high cost and Developing a comprehensive policy in the field of Braille.

The event ended with the award ceremony and praising the winners of the festival in four different sections of:  Essay writing; Achievements and effective activities; Research and Innovative ideas.
