UNESCO Santiago invites to celebrate International Museum Day

New forms of engagement with communities will be addressed on 18 May with guests from Chile, Colombia and Spain.
On Tuesday 18 May 2021, the Chilean Committee of Museums, its Colombian counterpart and the Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) will celebrate International Museum Day (IDM). This year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) established the theme "The Future of Museums: Reclaiming and Reimagining".
The aim is to encourage museum professionals to create, imagine and share new practices of co-creating value and innovative solutions to today's social and environmental challenges. The invitation is to re-imagine the future, proposing that every crisis should serve as an impetus for something new. Alongside this, it is key for the museum to be a space for social, cultural, civic and community reconnection.
"Museums can play an important role in creating links and cohesion in society, building citizenship and reflecting on collective identities. We are at a key moment to rethink museums and reflect on their social contribution, rooted in the community, with a view to the 50th anniversary of the Mesa de Santiago that we will commemorate in May 2022," says Nicol谩s del Valle, UNESCO's Culture Coordinator in Chile.
