UNESCO Supports Ethiopia in the implementation of the Technical and Vocational Education Policy and Strategy

UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office in collaboration with the Federal Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) Agency and Ethiopian Technical University organized stakeholders meeting from 20th – 21st May 2021 at Adama where concerned line Ministries, partners, stakeholders, and donors participated. The main objectives of the meeting were to present all outputs of the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) II project achievements in Ethiopia; and agree on how to align the output of the project in line with the new Ethiopian Technical and Vocational Education Policy and Strategy.

Ato Teshlae Berecha, President of Ethiopian Technical University, officially opened the Stakeholders meeting and underlined the importance of aligning the implementation of TVET in the new TVET policy and strategy. He appreciated UNESCO for hosting the meeting and thanked partners and stakeholders for their financial and technical support in the TVET System.

The Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) II project is a joint initiative between UNESCO and the Republic of Korea to support the improvement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems in Ethiopia. The improvement is on three result areas: TVET Relevance, TVET Quality and Perception of TVET, focusing on Agro-processing occupations.

The project coordinator of BEAR II project from UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office presented the aims of the BEAR II project by mentioning how the project promotes TVET by showcasing the results and benefits of investing in TVET systems in alleviating poverty, empowering individuals through employment and entrepreneurship, and contributing to sustainable economic growth. Thus, the project is one of the front actors in supporting the TVET System both technically and financially. Further, the UNESCO representative presented the main successes of the project in the three result areas i.e. Relevance, quality and perception of TVET.

The stakeholders and partners’ awareness creation workshop was conducted to enhance collaboration and the creation of partnerships in line with policy reform activities. Moreover, the second main agenda of the stakeholders meeting was to present the new Ethiopian Technical and Vocational Education Policy and Strategy. The representative from the Ethiopian Technical University stated that the new TVET policy and strategy emphases on: Ethiopian TVET relevance, quality, Equity and Access; Ethiopian TVET Research , Innovation and Technology Transfer; Ethiopian Science Culture Development and Community Engagement and Ethiopian TVET Infrastructure and Facility Equipment.

In conclusion of the Stakeholders meeting, Ato Habtamu Kibret, mentioned that, BEAR II project is the Pioneer in collaborating and working together with stakeholders according to the agreed action plan of the project. He emphasized that all projects and programmes need to align with the new TVET policy and strategy.
